AI Math Coach in Action: See What It Can Do for Your Classroom

It is 9 p.m. You are staring at tomorrow’s lesson, wondering how to differentiate a fraction task for your student who is still building fluency with whole numbers, and for the three students who will finish in five minutes flat. You don’t have a coach down the hall to bounce ideas off of tonight. But you do have AI Math Coach.

You already have AI Math Coach, you know the basics. But are you getting the most out of it? This blog post is for you, the teacher who has logged in a few times, maybe gotten a helpful response or two, and is wondering, what else can this thing do?

Here is a practical look at how to use AI Math Coach more intentionally, from writing better prompts to analyzing student work to knowing which assistant to use when.

Know Your Two Assistants
AI Math Coach has two distinct assistants and knowing which one to use makes a big difference in the quality of what you get back.

  • Structuring lessons that build conceptual understanding
  • Encouraging student discourse and reasoning
  • Streamlining program materials to focus on big ideas
  • Resources aligned to High Leverage Concepts (HLCs)

  • Analyzing student work samples for misconceptions
  • Planning centered on emerging strengths and next steps



Write a Better Prompt (It’s Easier Than You Think)
The most common reason AI Math Coach doesn’t give you what you need? The prompt is too vague. The good news is it doesn’t have to be perfect. AI Math Coach will ask clarifying questions when it needs more information. That is part of the process.

That said, the more context you give up front, the faster you get to something useful. Here is the difference:

Notice the difference? The second prompt tells AI Math Coach who the students are, what they can already do, what they are ready for next and the logistics of your time together. That is the sweet spot.

Here is another example:


Notice the difference? The second prompt tells AI Math coach the grade you are teaching, what they can already do, what they are struggling with and asks for specific materials. This prompt will mean many fewer follow up questions from AI Math Coach.

Don’t Just Ask Once, Push Back
AI Math Coach doesn't always nail it on the first try. That is not a bug, it is an invitation. Think of it like working with a really knowledgeable colleague, sometimes you need to redirect, clarify or say “that’s not quite what I meant.”

  • Share what worked or didn’t work from previous suggestions
  • Ask for clarification on specific parts of a recommendation
  • Request variations for different learning needs
  • Tell it how a strategy went in your classroom and ask for more ideas

Example follow up:
“The launch you suggested was great, but my students needed more time with the concrete model before moving to the number line. Can you suggest a way to extend that part of the lesson?”

Use it to Understand Student Thinking
One of the most powerful, and underused features of AI Math Coach is its ability to help you make sense of student work. Whether you can upload a photo (this permission is determined by your school district) or need to describe what you saw, AI Math Coach can help you figure out what a student was actually thinking and what to do next.

Example: Describing student work.
My students were solving this task “Jake and Mark each have sticker collections. Jake has 158 stickers and Mark has 83 stickers. Who has more stickers? How many more?” My student said Jake, then said 81. His equation says 158 − 83, then below it says +3 with an arrow moving from 83 to 158. The equation below says 161 − 80 = 81. Help me understand what this student was thinking.

You don’t need a perfect photo or a formal write up. Just describe what you observed, the numbers, the marks on the page, the strategy you think you see and AI Math Coach will help you interpret it and suggest next steps.

A Real Example: Differentiating a Fraction Task
Let’s get back to the teacher who is planning at 9 p .m. and see if we can help her out. She is a fourth grade teacher using Illustrative Mathematics and this is the task her students will be working on tomorrow.

"Elena's science club makes red and blue slime. She fills 5 small jars with slime to share with her friends. Each jar can fit ¾ cup of slime. How many cups of slime are in the jars?" -Illustrative Math, Grade 4, Unit 3, Lesson 4

The teacher writes this prompt:

"Help me differentiate this fraction task for my fourth grade students. One who is still building fluency with whole numbers, three students who will finish it in five minutes flat."

AI Math Coach asked one clarifying question, then returned differentiated entry points for the student still building whole number fluency, the on grade level group and the students ready for extension all connected to the same task so no one is doing something completely different from the class.

That is the shift: from “I don’t know how to reach everyone” to “I have three strong options for tomorrow.”
