What Are the New Windowpanes?
Published: October 21, 2025
All Learners Network has always included Windowpanes as part of our Math Menu options. They were created to provide cumulative review and practice for students. They also have been one of the tools we use for formative assessment to inform our next instructional steps. Our new Windowpanes continue to serve that purpose with a greater level of intentionality that will better guide informed instructional decision making.
Our new Windowpanes supply teachers with an opportunity to capture their students’ mathematical understandings. We've redesigned them for grades K-5 to give teachers a clearer, more organized way to see how their students are growing as mathematical thinkers throughout the year.
Each Windowpane provides 8 unique tasks in boxes A-H. Each box or “pane” allows students to share their understanding and solutions around a particular mathematical concept or skill. The concept/skill focus for each box remains the same throughout the year’s 30 Windowpane series for each grade level K-5, increasing in number range and complexity. This continued focus provides students with consistent practice on important concepts and skills and provides teachers with evidence of student progress. Windowpanes aren’t just “worksheets”; they deliver opportunities for purposeful practice that builds over time.
Example of a Windowpane:
This consistent structure means that teachers have a way to gather students’ progress over time around the High Leverage Concepts (HLC). The Windowpanes are directly aligned with the HLCs and HLC Progressions for the grade levels K-5.
In addition, each Windowpane now comes with a Solution Set – a collection of solutions and examples illuminating different ways students may respond to a task. In some problems, the Solution Set states the correct answer while other problems lead to the Solution Set identifying anticipated student responses. In all cases, the Solution Set does not cover the multiple models and strategies that could be used to find any given answer. This relies on the teacher having an understanding of the strategies and content at the grade/content level. The HLC Progressions can help guide teacher analysis of student work.
The beautiful thing about this system is how it creates a mathematical pathway, based on the HLCs, from Kindergarten through Fifth Grade. The concepts that appear in one grade level’s Windowpanes connect coherently to what students learned the year before and what they’ll tackle the next year. It’s like building a stable bridge where each grade level adds another section, creating a strong foundation of mathematical understanding.
ALN’s new Windowpanes provide teachers with a systematic, manageable way to check in on student learning without overwhelming themselves or their students. They are designed to be the platform for cumulative review within your math lesson structure during Math Menu, while simultaneously providing you with essential information about how each student is growing as a mathematician.
