Starting the Year with Math Menu: Building Routines That Free You Up for Small Group Instruction
Ask any math teacher what they wish they had more of, and the answer is almost always the same: time. Time to sit with a small group. Time to catch a student before they fall further behind. Time to stretch the learning of students who are ready for more.
Math Menu is how we find that time.
What Is Math Menu?
Math Menu is a learning experience for all students. It looks the same for every student but feels different for each one.
That's not a contradiction. Every student works through the same structure, the same expectations, the same routines. But what they're working on inside that structure depends on what they need. A few students are playing a multiplication game. Others are doing skills practice. Another pair of students are working on a problem solving task. A small group of students is sitting with you, working to build understanding of a critical pre-requisite concept that will support their grade level understanding.
Three beliefs sit underneath all of it:
- Students can and deserve the opportunity to be independent.
- The goal is understanding, not finishing a task.
- There's more than one way to solve a problem, work through it, and manage your time.
Math Menu vs. Station Rotation
This is the mix-up we hear most often, so it's worth spelling out.
Station rotation moves every student through the same set of activities on a timer. Math Menu works differently. Students select from purposeful offerings at their own pace, while you meet with small groups based on informed decisions through formative assessment.

*Note: Menu is not the time for new instruction. Reserve that for the Main Lesson.
What’s On the Menu
Four components make up a typical Math Menu:
- Windowpanes, for skills practice
- Problem Solvers, for applied thinking
- Games, for practice that doesn't feel like practice
- Journals, for reflection
The content on each menu should come from the High Leverage Concepts (HLCs), whatever strand your students are working in: Early Number, Additive Reasoning, Multiplicative Reasoning, Fractions, Proportional Reasoning, or Algebra. The HLCs allow us to narrow the focus to widen access to the mathematics that is most important at each grade level. The tighter the target, the more students can actually reach it.
Menu is also where you close gaps. It's the bridge between what a student currently knows and understands and where your first instruction is aimed. Done well, it leverages what a student already does well, builds the connection to where they're headed, and hands them more independence along the way.

A 6-Week Rollout Rather Than a First-Day Flip
The biggest mistake teachers can make with Math Menu is trying to start the whole thing on day one. The key is building it in layers, one piece at a time, so the routines actually stick.
Week 1: Introduce Math Menu and play a game together. This week is just about naming what Menu is and setting expectations. Where do we work? How loud is too loud? How do we get materials and put them back? Practice the routine with something low stakes, like a math game, before anything is graded or tracked.
Week 2: Introduce choice. Give students at least two games to pick from and let them choose a partner. This is also a good week to bring in Skills Practice and a Must-Do component. Talk through what a good choice actually looks like: did you pick a game to practice, or a game to challenge yourself?Week 3: Add Problem Solving or Journaling. Pick whichever fits your students right now. Journaling can tell you how they're feeling about Menu so far. Problem Solving tells you what they actually understand. Start practicing Teacher Time this week, meeting briefly with a group while the rest of the class works independently.
Week 4: Finish introducing every component. By now students should have game choices, a partner, and one to two Must-Do pieces. Use Teacher Time to meet briefly with every student, not just a group, so everyone builds the habit of managing their own time.
Weeks 5 and 6: Run the full Menu. Circulate, reinforce the routines you've built, and start pulling small groups for real intervention work. This is also your window to gather the formative data you'll need to prepare for small group instruction.
By week 7 or 8, students are working a full Menu while you're meeting with small groups, which was the point all along.
Setting Up the Room
Before you roll any of this out, walk through your space with a few questions:
- How do students get materials, and how do they put them away?
- Where do students work, and who do they work with?
- Does everyone do the same thing at the same time, or not?
- Do students already know the routines and expectations, or are you building those from scratch?
Small choices here, like whether a workspace is quiet or noisy, soft seating or hard, matter more than they seem to. Giving students the language to think about what they need to focus (bright or dim, talkative partner or quiet one) makes the independence piece work smoothly.
Build It Slowly, and Trust the Routine
None of this happens overnight, and it isn't supposed to. Every piece you add, from the first game to the first small group, is one more brick in a routine your students can run without you standing over them.
That's the whole point. The more independence students build during Menu, the more of your time goes to the students and the moments that need you most.
Math Menu provides teachers with a structure that gives you back the minutes you need for the instruction that matters most: sitting with a student, one on one or in a small group, and closing the gap that's actually there.
